Australian Open: Federer and Williams progress to Semi Final

It was an exciting day for worldwide tennis fans as we experienced a very exciting match at the quarter final of the Australian Open for the Men Single’s between Roger Federer and Nikolay Davydenko. The Swiss Champion and number one in tennis world rankings, Roger Federer managed to secure a win over the Russian Nikolay Davydenko and progress to the Australian Open Semi Final. Davydenko was exceptional on the first set where he managed to win it by 6-2 games. Federer raised his performance and he managed to win the second one with 6-3 games although he was losing with 3-0 at the beginning of the second set.
In the third set, the Swiss champion prevailed in every length and width of the court and he easily secured the win with 6-0 games. The fourth set was the most exciting one as the two tennis players were side by side having won 5 games each. However, Federer once again demonstrated an excellent display and with a break; he won the fourth set with 7-5 games and the match with 3-1 sets in two hours and 36 minutes. This was the 15th time the two tennis players met on court. Federer had 12 straight wins but he lost the last two encounters. With this win Federer secured the first position on the tennis world standings for 268 consecutive weeks equalizing the record of Jimmie Connors.
To the women’s singles, Na Li was playing against Venus Williams. Tennis fans were expecting an easy win of Venus in order to progress to the semi final where she would play her sister Vanessa Williams; however, the young Chinese champion displayed an excellent performance on the court as she managed to win Williams with 2-1 sets. Williams started the match very aggressively and she easily won the first set with 6-2 games. In the second set Williams was ahead with 5-4 games but Na Li managed to break Williams’ service and she eventually won the set with 7-6 games on tie break. A thrilling third set begun with the two tennis players to win one game after another. The score was at 5-5 when Na Li made the break and she won the third set with 7-5 games and the match with 2-1 sets after 2 hours and 47 minutes.
On the other quarter final, Serena Williams was playing against the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka; Wiliams was very close to suffer the same fate as her sister as she lost the first set with 6-4 games and she was losing the second set with 4-0 games. However, she didn’t give up and she managed to win the second set on tie break with 7-4 games. This was devastating for Azarenka as she surrendered to Williams play, losing eventually the last set with 6-2 games.
