Formula 1 – Stephan GP – the alternative to USF1 and to Campos Meta

It is clear that USF1 and Campos Meta are struggling financially, putting in doubt their participation in the Formula 1 2010 season. Once again, Bernie Ecclestone was more than clear as he stated that he doesn’t believe that USF1 or Campos Meta will be in position to participate to the first Formula 1 2010 season grand prix which is scheduled to Bahrain on the 14th of March.
He also stated that most likely those two teams will make use of the clause in the Concorde Agreement which states that teams are able to skip three races during the season. However, he was clear to mention that no official request was received so far.
Ecclestone also stated that there is another team ready to participate to the opening round, if USF1 or Campos Meta withdraws from the championship; as the Serbian Stephan GP is sponsored by the Serbian state and has already secured the necessary funding (Ecclestone himself confirmed that).
Stephan GP was not permitted to participate in the formula 1 2010 season as the regulations clearly state that the maximum number of teams cannot be more than thirteen. However, due to financial problems USF1 and Campos Meta might be facing, the Serbian team might get the chance to participate as they have already begun initial talks with a number of former Formula 1 pilots including high profile 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Kazuki Nakajima.
Less than 40 days left for the opening grand prix and USF1 and Campos Meta are still looking to sign their second racing driver. The reason is quite clear now as they want to bring someone who will offer some strong sponsorship to the team. Christian Klien and Andy Soucek were both linked with the two above mentioned teams but they both stated that are lacking the financial budget to secure a racing position. Most likely we will see them in a low profile but yet important role such during this period.
