Formula 1 continues this weekend in Turkey at the racing track just outside Istanbul. The championship battle really heated up as the two consecutive wins of Mark Webber and the excellent performances from his team mate Sebastian Vettel boost the two Red Bull’s drivers topping the standings with 78 points followed by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso with 73 points and McLaren’s Jenson Button with 70. The race is scheduled for this Sunday May 30th at 13:00 GMT in a racetrack anticipated to attract over 100,000 spectators from Turkey and neighboring countries such as Greece, Bulgaria and Russia. The 5.338 meters track is just five years old as the first race took place back in 2005. Designed by Hermann Tike featuring 14 turns where the speed trap is just before turn 12. The circuit is designed to host around 130,000 spectators while it features good standard facilities for both the teams and the fans. Last year the race was won by Jenson Button and it requires a car with a balance between grip and speed.
Red Bull’s main rivals McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes are developing new car parts in order to close the gap between the high flying Austrian team and as McLaren’s managing director Jonathan Neale stated, they are confident that they can catch the leaders within the next three races as they have already managed to close around 2.5 seconds gap since the beginning of the season. Another element that offers optimism to Red Bull’s challengers is the new point system which allows the teams and the drivers to advance in the standings very quickly as long as they are within top three spots.
Istanbul Circuit Facts: Juan Pablo Montoya holds the lap record with McLaren back in 2005 with 1:24.770. The longest straight part is 720 meters and the driver must make 38 gear shfts per lap while the car runs at full throttle 66.5% of the lap distance. The circuit is easy reachable as it is close by the Istanbul Airport built in the Asian side of the city.
