Formula1 – Belgian Grand Prix – Spa Francorchamps – Sunday 29th August
After a long; one month break, Formula 1 is back to action for the 13th round. The venue will take place at famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit at Belgium, a circuit that combines long straights, sharp corners and the famous Eau Rouge turn where the pilots drive up to a hill having no visibility of what may encounter at the end of the corner. The first practice session was under rain – rain is expected also during the weekend as well – so all the teams preferred to run setups for extreme wet conditions.
This year, Formula 1 offers as a unique experience as even after 13 rounds there is no clear indication of who might win the drivers’ championship as five pilots share equal chances. Mark Webber in Red Bull leads the standings (161 points -4 wins) followed by McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton (157 points – 2 wins) and the second Red Bull’s pilot Sebastian Vettel (147 points – 2wins) who enjoys the same points as the last year’s champion Jenson Button in McLaren (147 points – 2wins). On the fifth spot there is Fernando Alonso with Ferrari (141 points – 2 wins).
On the constructors championship Red Bull/Renault leads by 312 points followed by McLaren/Mercedes (304 points) while third is Ferrari by 238 points. The strange thing about the Formula1 2010 season is that Red Bull, despite qualifying session’s domination – 11 poles after 12 sessions – is unable to turn this to wins as they have managed only 6 out of 11.
Red bull (Christian Horner) expressed concerns regarding Spa’s long straights as they believe that Renault engine might not give them high speed – which is essential to Spa. As Horner stated, he believes that on this grand prix, McLaren might has the upper hand. “It is in the twisty second sector that we will have to make up time,” Horner told Auto Motor und Sport. “Down the hill to Eau Rouge, and on the long straight and then back to the finish, we will lose out.”
This is something that Sebastian Vettel shares as well: “I love Spa, it has some of the best corner sections in Formula One, they’re long, fast-flowing and suit our car,” he said. “We were very competitive in the race there last year, but we lost out in qualifying a bit. Our weakness will be the long straights and, with uphill sections too, we know it won’t be easy for us, but I am optimistic for the race”.
Pilots and spectators love the Belgian Grand Prix. Spa-Francorchamps has been famous for its unpredictable weather and for the fact that on one part of the circuit might rain heavily while on other part to be completely dry! Circuit Length: 7.004 km, Race Distance: 308.052 km, Lap Record: 1:45.108 – K Raikkonen (2004), Number of Laps: 44. However, if there will be rain during the grand prix day, things will be a lot of different, as cars’ high speed will not be an issue.
