Formula 1 News – Summary of the First Official testing Day
Posted on February 4, 2010 by John Trevors for Luckyroom.com
Although the pre-season testing periods are not used to produce safe results for the future performances of the Formula 1 teams, we do have the opportunity to see the path that each team follows. The fact is that so far, Ferrari is the best team from all seven that were presented in Valencia. The experienced Italian team has faced limited problems while they managed to achieve the fasted lap times on each of the three days the tests last. Felipe Massa is to an exceptional form and there are no indications that his injury back at August has affected his driving confidence. Ferrari’s driver, Fernando Alonso was toping the tables with similar lap times as Massa and as he is eventually getting used to the new car which will help him produce better results.
Last year’s champions principal director Ross Brawn – Brawn GP renamed to Mercedes – stated that his team was slower than some of their main competitors for the Formula 1 season. He indicated that the slow pace was as a result of the balance problem they are experienced but they know how to fix it. He also admitted that they are experiencing adaptation problem with the new tyres specifications.
On the other hand, Michael Schumacher stated that he is very happy by the way the car performed in the initial tests but there are still many things that must be done in order to be able to produce good results. He also stated that the team has as first aim some good racing placements in the first few races without the need of win to be they only aim.
Sauber GP will be once again included in the top five teams as they managed to produce some good lap rounds but there is the estimation that had 20 kilos less fuel into their tanks than the rest of the teams in order to achieve a direct comparison data between the 2009 and 2010 cars. However, the team seems that will be able to continue the good racing history they had so far, this year with a Ferrari engine.
A big question mark is placed over the Mclaren team as they were unable to produce some fast laps with the new MP4-25. They didn’t have any major problems but it is certainly obvious that they need a lot work in order to match the pace of their main competitors.
On the other hand, Renault is still struggling to create a fast cat setup as they were almost two seconds behind the fasted lap each day. In the same path lies Williams and Torro Rosso.
However, we would like to note once again that this was just the first official testing period for the Formula 1 2010 season where only 7 teams participate. The purpose of those tests was the teams to check car electronics, balance distribution and seal familiarity with the new tyre specifiactions. We would be able to produce a better estimation regarding teams’ strength in the second official testing period in Jerez in a couple of weeks. There, we anticipate at least ten teams out of the overall thirteen to take part of the tests having 15 days of further car development.
