|Formula 1 is heading to China this week April 18th for the Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit. After three races the championship battle seems more unpredictable than ever as 7 drivers are within a 10 points margin from Felipe Massa who tops the Formula 1 standings. Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes share the same pace while Renault with Robert Kubica seems able to challenge the big teams at least in the Driver’s championship. However, the season has just started and only after the completion of the first third of races we will be able to get a clear picture of who can be a potential winner.|
However, it is clear that McLaren and Ferrari are not fully satisfied from the performance of their cars as they do luck the pace in qualification sessions. This has caused them to begin the races with significant handicap so far as Red Bull usually dominates the first row – two Poles for Vettel and 1 for Webber.
Elsewhere in Formula 1: doubts have risen regarding the Korean Grand Prix. The German magazine Focus claimed that the grand prix circuit at Yeongam will not be ready in time therefore this might cause the cancelation of the race. Bernie Ecclestone traveled directly to South Korea after the completion of the Malaysian Grand Prix in order to personally check the progress of the project. The race is scheduled for October 24 and it is up to Ecclestone if he will cancel or not the scheduled event.
In addition, Formula 1 faces the problem of the tyres supply as current provider – Bridgestone – has already announced that will not continue to supply tyres to the Formula 1 cars for the 2011 season. Michelin has expressed the desire to fill in the vacant space but only after a “right agreement” which most probably involves payment from the teams. Interest to supply tyres to Formula 1 has also been expressed by Korean manufacturers Kumho and Hankook without any official announcement however.
