Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao made clear that he will not bow to pressure for appreciation of the yuan. In an online interview with news agency Xinhua, Mr Wen said he would continue to apply measures to stimulate economic development and tackling of the financial crisis, but will seek to limit the uncontrolled lending and lowering of prices of real estate. He pointed out that while the foreign partners of China ask Beijing authorities to allow the strengthening of the national currency, while adopting various protectionist trade measures, in an attempt to limit the growth of China.
The value of the yuan forex exchange rate which is linked against the dollar at most online fx sites since mid 2008 is a “thorny” issue between Beijing and its trading partners in the West who say that the Chinese authorities keep the Chinese currency undervalued, giving unfair advantage to Chinese exports. In addition, Mr Wen noted that during 2010 he will take additional measures to stimulate the economy after the four trillion yuan (586 billion U.S. dollars) support package granted last year, which was combined with efforts to support consumer spending during the global economic downturn.
Finally, Mr Wen said the government would crack down on illegal activities that drive up housing prices while seeking to control the loans from Chinese banks, which could contribute to inflationary pressures. “While the land is recovering rapidly this year, housing prices in some areas are increasing too, a development that merits serious attention by the government,” said Mr Wen.
