Phil Ivey Player of the Decade

Poker blog “Wicked Chops Poker” in its column in Bluff Magazine of the January issue, proposes poker player of the decade for the modern era of poker, starting in 1970. So let’s see what the options are: “The criterion for selecting a player in this position was simple“: Which player had the greatest success and influence over the game in every decade in the modern era of poker? Although for several decades, the choice was difficult, in general it was quite clear who was the best player. Below a brief summary of the biggest figures of modern and classic poker and online poker.
Player of the Decade – 2000’s: Phil Ivey
Honors: Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Chris Moneymaker
Ivey appeared in 2000, winning a Jack Binion World Poker Open event. Since then he has collected more than $11 million in profits from poker tournaments and has established himself as one of the best live and online cash game players in the world. The appearance of a Main Event final table of the WSOP in 2009 further strengthened his status. Even players who have chosen to honor, Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth, openly admit that Phil Ivey of Full Tilt Poker is the best poker player in the modern history of poker world.
Player of the Decade – 1970’s: Doyle Brunson
Honors: Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim
Although the choice is no surprise, certainly the “Godfather of Poker” had tough competition. Brunson won six of his ten bracelets in the period running through 1976 and 1979, a number that brings him tied with Moss for the decade. Both Doyle Brunson and Johnny Moss won two WSOP Main Event titles this decade. But the contract by the Branson Super / System was the one that finally gives him his title.
Player of the Decade – 1980’s: Johnny Chan
Honors: Stu Ungar
This was perhaps the most difficult decade for selecting the winner. Ultimately, however, two consecutive titles of the WSOP Main Event from Johnny Chan (and the second the next year in that memorable heads up tournament with the then unknown young Phil Hellmuth) puts him on top.
Player of the Decade – 1990’s: Phil Hellmuth
Initially we thought that this decade will have selection problems. But when we saw the numbers, it seemed clear that Hellmuth really dominated the 90’s. He won 5 of the bracelets in this decade. He wrote a popular book. He started marketing around his name. He was literally an unstoppable machine at a time which we consider as a medieval game of poker.
