Tennis – Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship – Federer Not Participating Final

One of the most important tennis events is starting today in Dubai. The Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship is a glamorous tournament where the elite players of the tennis world are participating for a total prize pool of over two million dollars. Last minute news is that the number one in tennis world standings Roger Federer, will not participate on the event due to a lung infection which will keep him off the courts for at least a couple of weeks. Federer stated that he was very unhappy to be advised to stay out of the Fiesta as he feels the Dubai area as a second home.
The tournament is featuring some of the most popular tennis players including Novak Djokovic(2), Andy Murray(4), Nikolay Davydenko(6), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga(9), Marin Cilic(10), Gilles Simon (16), Ivan Ljubicic(24), Marcos Baghdatis(36) and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (47).
The high profile tournament is the first major tennis event after the Australian Open where players can measure their progress and cash-out a large amount of money. Last year the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship was won by number two in tennis world standings Novak Djokovic while the 2008 winner was Andy Roddick. Federer is the most times winner of the tournament with four trophies (2007, 2003, 2004, 2005).

V Troicki (SRB) defeated R Schuettler (GER) 6-3 6-4
S Koubek (AUT) defeated F Lopez (ESP) 7-6 6-4
In the women’s singles the final was held on Saturday where Venus Williams didn’t have any trouble wining Bulgarian V Azarenka with 2-0 sets (6-3, 7-5) and keeping the title for the second year in the row.
