The organizers of the WSOP 2010 event expressed their optimism that the upcoming World Series of Poker will be the largest that has ever been organized. “Under the plan we develop, we expect the numbers to be very high,” said Ty Stewart, Vice President, adding: “A bold prediction I can make is that the entries will make this year a new record!” The optimism is in large part justified if one considers that the available space in the Rio Convention Centre for all the WSOP events will increase this year by 25%. In total, 377 tables will be available, allowing nearly 3400 players to play poker simultaneously in one single space!
Already, the number of pre-registered players is greater than any other year. “Several thousand players have already pre-register for all tournaments. So far, the most popular events is the Seniors’ event, the event for $ 1,000 and the Main Event », said tournament director of the WSOP, Jack Effel. Understanding the public demand for low buy-in tournament events, the administrators are considering to add another $1,000 poker tournament at the opening weekend. Additionally, on every weekend a similar buy-in event will be available till the beginning of #57 Main Event which is no other than the $10,000 buy-in No Limit Texas Holdem.
One of the highlights of this year’s WSOP will be the Tournament of Champions. As it has been announced, the majority of participants in this event will be determined after an online poll, which is already underway. More than 300,000 poker fans have voted so far on what players want to see on the tables of the tournament, where first in votes is no other than Full Tilt Poker Pro, Phil Ivey. The final table of this event will be held on July 4 and will be filmed to be broadcast later by ESPN.
Efel is confident of the success of the new 6-handed event, where the buy-in is set at $ 25,000, and is scheduled on June 30th. “We feel that we will have several entries. The 6-handed poker is gaining in popularity every day. It is the second most popular variation of Texas Hold’em and we believe that will raise the interest of many players” Obviously the big event of the WSOP will be, like every year the Main Event. The final table of the top 9 players will be played at November on a date that will be announced a short time after the conclusion of the WSOP.
Last year, the WSOP events attracted 60,875 players from 115 different countries, contributing to a total of nearly $ 175,000,000 in cash prizes. It remains to be seen whether the predictions of the organizers for even higher numbers will be confirmed.
